OASIS MAN LOSES LEGAL BID
[28 Nov 2002] dotmusic
Former Oasis drummer, Tony McCarroll, has lost his bid to sue the band's lawyers over his sacking because he took too long to start legal action.

McCarroll, a founding member of the Manc rock goliaths, claims that solicitors Statham Gill Davies had negligently handled Oasis' 1993 recording contract with Sony, allowing the band to sack him without any compensation.

London's High Court, awarding summary judgement to the solicitors without the need for a full trial, said McCarroll had failed to bring his claim within the legal limit of six years from the date his cause of action arose.

According to Reuters, the judge noted that McCarroll had "failed to point out that the effect of the Sony agreement was that the name Oasis was owned by the Gallagher brothers and left him vulnerable to instant dismissal without compensation."

"My conclusion is that the claimant did suffer relevant and measurable damage at the date when the Sony agreement was executed. It follows that the cause of action accrued more than six years before these proceedings were issued," he said.

McCarroll, who formed Oasis with schoolmates Liam Gallagher, Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs and Paul McGuigan, was still with the band when their 1994 debut, 'Definitely Maybe', reached the top of the UK album charts.

The judge said the former drummer had already won a "modest lump sum" from Oasis over royalties for material released before his 1995 ejection.

Oasis have gone on to sell over 29 million albums worldwide but only brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher remain from the band's original line-up.

ARE YOU LOATHSOME TONIGHT?
[25 Nov 2002] dotmusic
Noel Gallagher claims his relationship with brother Liam has disintegrated so dramatically, that the Oasis wildman is "no longer one of us".

Noel's revelation that his younger brother now thinks he's Elvis Presley, comes amid speculation that the pair have not actually spoken in weeks, as they tour Europe.

In an interview with an Italian newspaper, Noel explained how severely the relationship between the band and Liam had deteriorated.

He said: "As far as the other guys from Oasis and me think, he's no longer one of us. We haven't spoken for weeks. I can't be bothered to deal with the ego of someone who thinks he's a big star".

He is above everything because he thinks he's Elvis Presley, said Noel, after Liam failed to show for a soundcheck at a concert in Milan recently.

He concluded: "We don't consider him an important element of the band, whereas he thinks he is. He talks and talks but what he says is of no interest to me or the band."

Robbie Williams smashes Oasis' sellout record
[24 Nov 2002] NME
ROBBIE WILLIAMS has beaten OASIS' record in selling out two dates at Knebworth - selling out in just seven hours, beating the Gallaghers record by two hours. In order to satisfy demand Robbie has added a third date on 1 August 2003 in addition to dates on the 2 and 3 August at Knebworth in Hertfordshire.

The new date is the latest edition to a 16-date European tour which also sees him taking in Edinburgh and Dublin.

The news is bound to reignite animosity between Robbie and the Gallaghers which has frequently boiled over since Liam dismissed Robbie as a 'fat dancer'. Oasis sold 250,000 tickets in 1996 to their Knebworth shows - although over two million attempted to buy them.

Oasis to release Liam-penned tune as next single
[22 Nov 2002] NME
The first LIAM GALLAGHER-penned OASIS single 'SONGBIRD' is to be released in 2003, NME.COM can reveal.

The track, which has become a fan favourite, and covered live by Coldplay's Chris Martin, is tentatively scheduled for January via Big Brother.

Alongside 'Better Man' and 'Born On A Different Cloud', 'Songbird' is considered Liam's most commercial effort on their current album 'Heathen Chemistry'.

Oasis are currently in Europe on tour, and return to the UK in December for a string of dates, which have all sold out.

Video footage of NOEL GALLAGHER, CHRIS MARTIN and MS DYNAMITE at the 'FAIR PLAY' charity concert in LONDON is available online.

'Fair Play' (October 29) was organised by Emily Eavis, the daughter of Glastonbury founder Michael. The show was intended to raise cash and awareness for Oxfam, helping to raise the profile of their Make Trade Fair campaign.

The bill featured Lamb, Idlewild, Noel Gallagher and Coldplay, who were billed as featuring 'special guests'.

The Oxfam website is currently hosting video footage of Gallagher playing 'Wonderwall', as well as Martin and Dynamite performing 'Dy-na-mi-tee' and Chris and Noel doing 'Yellow'. The final clip shows Martin and Jonny Buckland performing 'In My Place'.

Liam and Noel no longer on speaking terms
[20 Nov 2002] NME
LIAM and NOEL GALLAGHER have fallen out again, NME.COM can reveal - and the brothers are no longer on speaking terms. The falling-out between the brothers happened almost six weeks ago when Liam stormed offstage at the beginning of an Oasis gig in Japan.

Liam had bowed out of the gig at Fukuoka Kokusai Center after he said his voice had packed in. But Noel reacted furiously and is still blaming his younger brother for leaving him to sing a solo set.

Noel told NME.COM: "Liam had been whingeing about his monitors all the way through the tour, really bitching. After the fourth song, 'cMorning Glory', I said to him 'Are you gonna fucking shut up for the rest of the fucking year, or are you gonna carry on moaning you moaning bastard?'. He looked at me really weirdly and threw his tambourine on the floor like a woman, then walked off."

At first, Noel assumed Liam would return. But he had gone for the night. Noel added: "The tour manager said he had gone, so I thought: 'You fucking wanker'. They got Liam on the phone and there was just this torrent of abuse. I haven't spoken to him since. Not a word. It's probably best that way, until the tour is finished. Because if I did, I would probably knock him out.

"If he walks into a room, I'll walk out because I think he fucking let us down. I don't mind if he's got a sore throat, but not if he just wantonly has a diva fit on stage because his elder brother tells him to stop moaning. Because if everyone at the gig sees the singer having a bad time, they think: should I be having a good time or a bad time?"

BRITPOP LIVES FOREVER
[8 Nov 2002] dotmusic
A new film documenting the rise of Britpop is to be released in the UK next year, dotmusic can report. 'Live Forever' charts the resurgence of British music, art, fashion, film and politics in the 1990's and features contributions from Liam Gallagher, Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker, Damien Hirst, Peter Mandelson MP, designer Ozwald Boateng, and magazine editor James Brown amongst others.

Kicking off with the Stone Roses' now legendary Spike Island concert, the film also takes a nostalgic look back at the Oasis vs Blur standoff, Oasis' Knebworth gig, Labour's return to power and the return of pop music towards the end of the century.

Producer John Battsek has revealed plans to release the movie in the States soon after its UK release. He told Xfm: "The reaction from the US so far has been really good. They love the Britishness of it and in typical US-style love the chance to embrace a film that salutes British culture." Battsek said there were plans for an accompanying soundtrack album to the film, though details were still to be confirmed.

'Live Forever' is due to be released in the UK on January 31, with a London Film Festival premiere scheduled for November 12.
