OASIS CANCEL SALAMANCA DATE DUE TO SINGER'S ILLNES
[23 July 2002] Official Site
Oasis have been forced to cancel their show today in Salamanca due to singer Liam Gallagher suffering a throat infection. The doctors have ordered him to rest his voice which means that he will be unable to undertake this evening's performance. At this point in time there is no reason to believe that tomorrow's show in Vigo is under threat.

Oasis regret being unable to undertake tonight's show and hope to come back to Salamanca at some time in the not too distant future.

LET IT BLEED
[23 July 2002] dotmusic
Noel Gallagher has claimed The Rolling Stones should quit the music industry and insisted all their material except 'Let It Bleed', is "nonsense". In his latest broadside against music figures, the Oasis guitarist also put the boot into System Of A Down, who he calls "the worst around". Gallagher told Maxim Magazine that The Rolling Stones, who are currently preparing for their latest world tour, had only recorded one good album in their 40-year career.

He said: "The rest of them, I just can't sit through all that nonsense. They should just call it a day. I would like to say to them, 'have you got anything better to do?' I mean, surely to God".

On the subject of System Of A Down, Gallagher commented: "Of all the bands that have gone before and all the bands that'll be in the future, I was around when the worst was around".

The band will play an open air show at the Prehen Playing Fields, Derry on Saturday 7th September with special guests Ocean Colour Scene.

Oasis' ghostly encounter
[15 July 2002] BBC Radio1
Noel Gallagher has told the Belfast Telegraph that the ghost of John Entwhistle was on stage with them when Oasis played the Odyssey Theatre two weeks ago. The Who bassist was found dead in Las Vegas hours before Oasis were due on stage in Belfast.

When they started playing 'My Generation' as a tribute to Entwhistle, a string on Andy Bell's bass guitar snapped. Noel said that it was just spooky:

"It was the very first note of the old Who hit 'My Generation', and that string snapped on that very note. It was weird. I've never seen anything like that happening before. It was the oddest thing I've ever seen. It was as if John Entwhistle was up there on the stage watching us."

Oasis and Starsailor in bust-up backstage at T In The Park festival
[14 July 2002] NME
OASIS and STARSAILOR were involved in a backstage fight yesterday (July 13) at T In The Park after Starsailor frontman James Walsh asked Noel Gallagher about a remark he made about him recently in the NME.

Liam Gallagher became involved and was physically restrained by one of his security guards after the spat degenerated into a near brawl. The rock 'n roll row began in mid-afternoon when Walsh approached Noel and asked him why he had called him "a cock" in a recent interview. Noel replied: "I don't know what you're talking about. But you must be a cock then and by the way, you're wearing my t-shirt."

Within minutes, frontman Liam became involved. "Liam came over and squared up to me," Walsh told NME.COM this morning (July 14), "He puffed up his little pigeon chest and said: 'Don't ever interupt my brother's interview again [Noel had been doing a number of interviews in the backstage area at the time]. If someone says you are a cock, then you are one. That's it.' He then got his security guards over and one held him back while I was talking to another one. It all just got a bit out of hand."

Walsh said he thought the entire thing was "quite funny". "I was a huge fan of Oasis," he added, "We're a band who were inspired by them. It tarnishes the spirit of it." Oasis could not be reached for comment this morning.

Both bands move from T In The Park to the Witnness Festival just outside of Dublin today. Security is bound to be high in a bid to keep the both camps apart. Despite the row, Walsh described Starsailor's appearance at the festival as "amazing - it was better than Glastonbury."

On the mainstage, Oasis ruled the roost, dragging most of the NME Stage headliners Basement Jaxx's prospective fans across the site to watch them. It was the first time they had played at T In The Park - in front of their fervent Scottish fans - since 1994. Oasis' set, including 'Columbia', 'Hello' and a raft of new material from current album 'Heathen Chemistry', was almost the same as that played last week at their three day weekend at Finsbury Park in London.

Oasis plan return trip to Australia
[12 July 2002] NME
NOEL GALLAGHER has said OASIS are planning a return to Australia, four years after their only "awful" trip there. The group played their only Australian dates in February and March 1998, when they were touring third album 'Be Here Now'.

The band's trip started on a bad note when Liam Gallagher was banned from airline Cathay Pacific after allegedly abusing passengers and crew on the flight to Perth from Hong Kong. Gallagher told the Australian Herald Sun newspaper that the "rotten" gigs mean he considers Oasis have "unfinished business" down under.

He said: "We were rotten every night we played. It was awful. When we started to draw a plan of action for this year I said, 'We've got to go back to Australia', and everyone was like, 'Why? We didn't have a good time last time'.

"And I said, 'We have to go back, if that's the only time we ever go, it cannot be left like that'. We've got unfinished business. I have to say in our defence it was the end of a nine-month world tour and I think everyone was verging on alcoholism. There were a lot of drugs about, I was nearly 13kg overweight. But you live and learn."

Noel said that this time he plans to do some sightseeing, rather than sitting in a hotel bar for "two weeks".

He continued: "We've worked out it's probably better not to go out the night before a gig. It's probably better to go out the night after a gig when you've got a day off the next day.

"Whereas we didn't like to discriminate between that kind of stuff on the 'Be Here Now' tour. Every night was Friday night, the gig was only something that got in the way.

"We just carried on drinking on stage. But fuck it. We got paid. We didn't really want to be there, we just wanted to be in the pub, so we just brought the pub along with us."

Oasis tour Europe throughout July, before heading off to the US in August. More UK dates follow in September, followed by a trip to the Far East. Australian dates could follow their visit to Japan in October.

Oasis's Noel Gallagher Calls Rolling Stones Tour A 'Ridiculous' Idea
[11 July 2002] launch
The always-opinionated Noel Gallagher of Oasis usually isn't at a loss for targets, and he doesn't suffer what he considers to be rock-and-roll fools lightly. Today's target is the Rolling Stones, who are preparing to light out on a North American tour beginning September 3 to celebrate the group's 40th anniversary.

Gallagher tells LAUNCH that he feels it's well past the time for the Stones to bring a curtain down on the group's vaunted career. "The Stones have looked ridiculous for 10 f--king years, apart from Ronnie Wood. He's a f--ing geezer, but Mick Jagger in tights at 60? Are you sure? Come on! We won't be f--king going onstage when we're 60, like half of these other f--king people who should know better at their age."

Oasis launches a North American tour of its own on August 2 in Pompano Beach, Florida, to promote its latest album, Heathen Chemistry.

Robert Carlyle In New Oasis Video
[10 July 2002] XFM
Oasis were filming the video for their next single eLittle By Little' on location near Moorgate in London yesterday, with a little help from 'Trainspotting' actor Robert Carlyle.

The video for the third single off eHeathen Chemistyf, is being shot in a variety of locations and venues over three days in the capital by the famed directors Max & Dania from the production company Bullet (who have previously worked on videos for other uncompromising, world renowned rock artists like Craig David, Ronan Keating and So Solid Crew)

While shooting started on Monday (the day directly after the bandfs Finsbury Park concerts) Oasis themselves only joined the filming yesterday (9th July) and were said to be gbearing up really wellh despite their punishing schedule.

The filming took place on Lackington Street (renamed Heathen Street for the shoot) in the City of London, EC2 and featured Noel busking for change while surrounded by industrious city types.

Liamfs role seemed to be more akin to that of Richard Ashcroft in The Vervefs eBittersweet Symphonyf video, with the singer dressed in a huge white parka, bumping into various members of the public. One of whom turned out to be Hamish Macbeth himself - actor Robert Carlyle, who gets knocked over and is helped out of the gutter by the Liam.

According to a spokesman, the video is about gA little man who grows up, with the band watchingh with Carlyle gplaying the leading roleh. No release date has been set for eLittle by Littlef as yet.

HUNG IN AN ARTY PLACE
[10 July 2002] dotmusic
Oasis's music career is to be documented with photographs at an exclusive London exhibition next month, dotmusic can confirm. The exhibition is entitled 'Been There Done That' and will showcase the photography of rock 'n' roll snapper Roger Sargent, who has followed the band since their very first London gig in 1993. Sargant has been taking photos throughout Oasis's career, documenting the band's rise to prominence and their subsequent stranglehold on the British rock scene, right up to last weekend's acclaimed Finsbury Park shows.

'Been There Done That' will run from August 5 to September 2 at the new Basement Gallery in Waterloo, which has been set-up solely for exhibitions associated with music. After the exhibition closes limited edition signed prints of the photography will be available for the public to buy.

NOEL BLASTS MICHAEL
[9 July 2002] dotmusic
Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has launched yet another scathing verbal assault, this time calling George Michael "a liar and a fake". Gallagher senior was speaking about Michael's new 'political' single 'Shoot the Dog', in his latest outburst.

He insisted: "He's now trying to make social comment, this is the guy who hid who he actually was from the public for 20 years, now, all of a sudden, he's got something to say about the world. I find it laughable. "That's before you get to the song, which is diabolical."

Noel is famed for his verbal outbursts and has long been critical of the likes of Damon Albarn, Victoria Beckham and Robbie Williams. Only a fortnight ago he branded Kylie Minogue "a demonic little idiot".

Gallagher has also spoken out about the state of the British music industry, in an interview with XFM.

He said: "I think that the British music industry is suffering from a lot of fear at the moment, for people losing their jobs.

"It's all about making money. It's all about Westlife and that 'Pop Idol' thing. Nothing has a very long shelf life, and the music has no depth to it.

"Gone are the days when bands like The Smiths and The Jam would always be in the top ten. Oasis are probably the last of the big - and I use this term because I can't think of another - 'alternative' bands to really make an impact on the country."

In other Oasis news, the band have added two Scottish indoor shows to their headline performance at T In The Park. The Gallagher brothers will now play the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference centre on September 9 and 10.

Oasis make their mark
[8 July 2002] BBC Radio1
It's been a big weekend for Oasis - their new album 'Heathen Chemistry' went to No.1 selling almost a quarter of a million copies - that's the highest one week sale of an album so far this year.

The band also performed three huge gigs at Finsbury Park over the weekend, and they got a great reception. Kelly from the Stereophonics, Electric Soft Parade and Spencer from 'Big Brother' could all be spotted in the crowd.

Backstage Noel told Radio 1 their next single will be a double A-side: 'She is Love' and 'Little by Little', with 'My Generation' as an extra track. But he said the choice of the new single wasn't his:

"I don't pick singles anymore. I can't be bothered because they're all good. I'd have gone with 'Songbird' myself."

"If I pick singles that I sing, it means I've got to sing them live for evermore and it means I've got to turn up and spend most of the day on the video set and I f****** hate that."

"'Songbird' might be next - it all depends on how things go."

OASIS FINSBURY PARK SHOWS 'BETTER THAN KNEBWORTH
[7 July 2002] NME
OASIS fans have declared last weekend's gigs at FINSBURY PARK better than their seminal show at KNEBWORTH. That was the sensational verdict of a poll conducted by NME.COM last weekend at the shows. We asked hundreds of Oasis fans leaving the site after Friday's (July 5) show whether they had taken part in the Britpop defining Knebworth weekend back in 1996 and of those that had, an amazing 75% considered Friday's show a better experience, despite the rain and sound problems suffered by the band.

In another boost to the band's new-found standing as Britain's most popular live attraction (tickets sold out for all three of the Finsbury Park shows in a matter of hours), 20% of the people polled also considered the band's new album, 'Heathen Chemistry' their best ever and twice as many reckoned Oasis should carry on rather than splitting up.

The poll, under the title 'All their people, right here, right now', was conducted exclusively by NME.COM to reveal a unique snapshot of Oasis fans, arguably the most mad-for-it fanbase in the world. For the full results, see this week's souvenir issue, which is out in London now, and nationwide tomorrow (July 10).

Oasis triumph in London mudbath
[5 July 2002] NME
OASIS paid tribute to THE WHO's late bassist JOHN ENTWISTLE at the first of three massive LONDON shows this evening (July 5).

The band played a sold out, open air show at Finsbury Park in front of 40,000 fans. The band's set was comprised mainly of songs from their current album 'Heathen Chemistry', as well classic singles including 'Some Might Say', 'Live Forever' and 'Don't Look Back In Anger'.

However, their set closed with a rousing cover of The Who's 'My Generation', dedicated to Entwistle by singer Liam Gallagher. The bassist was found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room last week.

Liam, dressed in a full length coat with various patterns and patches stitched on, was on fine form throughout - berating journalists for the mixed reception to their new album, and proclaiming himself the true spirit of rock and roll.

Unfortunately, by the time Oasis took to the stage at 8.30pm, Finsbury Park resembled a mud bath in places, with persistent and heavy showers throughout the day plaguing sets from support bands including The Coral, Soundtrack Of Our Lives, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Charlatans.

Fans were unfazed by the mud. One, who had travelled down from Liverpool for the gig told NME.COM: "We've been down here for most of the day, and came prepared. I've not seen Oasis since they played Knebworth, so a bit of rain won't spoil it!"

Organisers also put artificial flooring across the grass at the front of the stage to ensure the safety of concertgoers.

Oasis played:
  • Fucking In The Bushes
  • Hello
  • The Hindu Times
  • Hung In A Bad Place
  • Go Let It Out
  • Columbia
  • Morning Glory
  • Stop Crying Your Heart Out
  • Little By Little
  • D'yer Know What I Mean
  • Cigarettes And Alcohol
  • Live Forever
  • Better Man
  • She's Electric
  • Born On A Different Cloud
  • Acquiesce

  • Force Of Nature
  • Don't Look Back In Anger
  • Some Might Say
  • My Generation
The band return for two more nights at Finsbury Park tomorrow and Sunday (July 6-7).

Oasis gear up for gigs at Finsbury Park
[4 July 2002] BBC RAdio1
Oasis are getting ready for three huge gigs at London's Finsbury park over the weekend. The first one is tomorrow and bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Charlatans are on the bill as well. It's part of their sell-out European tour which has seen them perform in Berlin, Barcelona, Belfast, and Hull.

Noel Gallagher popped in to Radio 1 earlier today (Thursday) on his way to do a soundcheck. He told us what set list we can expect from Oasis:

"Well we're playing seven off the new album, the other 12 are from back in the day and there's a Who cover. Sometimes you can get nervous when you're playing to five-six hundred people and then I remember walking out on the stage at Knebworth in front of 25,000 people and it just didn't register at all, so it just depends how you feel during the day I suppose."

When asked if they were nervous about playing with the Charlatans, hailed as one of the highlights of Glastonbury, Noel replied:

"We've been awarded awards for being the best live band in the world on many an occasion, so we don't have nowt to prove to anybody, but good for the Charlatans because they're going to have to be better than us I'll tell you that."

Oasis will be headlining T in the Park in Scotland and their album 'Heathen Chemistry' is in the shops now.

IT'S GETTING WORSE MAN
[4 July 2002] dotmusic
Oasis have been making sub-standard rock'n'roll for seven years, a new poll of their fans has revealed. The survey in Q Magazine compiles what fans consider to be the Manc rock heavyweights' finest moments. Only one track in the Top 30 was recorded before 1995, with the title track form the band's appallingly received third long-player 'Be Here Now' claiming 30th place.

Elsewhere, 'Live Forever', the 1994 landmark single, tops the chart, ahead of 'Acquiesce' and 'Supersonic' at number three. The majority of tracks recorded since 1995 feature towards the bottom end of the Top 50.

The Top 10 is as follows:

1 - 'Live Forever'
2 - 'Acquiesce'
3 - 'Supersonic'
4 - 'Slide Away'
5 - 'Half The World Away'
6 - 'Cigarettes And Alcohol'
7 - 'Rock 'n' Roll Star'
8 - 'Colombia'
9 - 'Roll With It'
10 - 'Talk Tonight'

In other Oasis news, UK Radio Station XFM is to broadcast the band's show at London's Finsbury Park on Sunday.

The Gallagher brothers will be joined by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Charlatans at the concert, which can be heard from 5pm on Sunday at 104.9FM.

LIAM'S DRUG OUTBURST
[2 July 2002] dotmusic
Liam Gallagher has claimed that he wouldn't mind if his own children started taking drugs. But the Oasis star says it would only be alright if they were doing something good with their lives.

"If my son was to sit around doing nothing and popping pills all day then I'd give him a smack. But if he was taking drugs and really achieving something with his life then that would be OK," Liam told German magazine Max.

Liam also revealed that his own drug taking days are now behind him. He said: "Some of the best times of my life were spent on acid.

"But I'm 30 years old now and have two kids to look after. I can't just sit around taking drugs all day with them next to me."

But the unruly singer is still fond of his drink and boasts of being able to "drink like a fish", although he has cut down for the sake of his family and his wallet.

"I only go on drinking binges from Friday to Sunday," he said. "Anyway, every time I go out in London I get mixed up in some sort of trouble and it just costs me far too much money."

Only last week Liam's brother, Noel, revealed how the singer's kids were already imitating their father's wild ways. He was quoted as saying: "I have to say that his kids take after their father - they'll be a menace to society."

Oasis pay tribute to Who bassist at Belfast gig
[1 July 2002] NME
OASIS paid tribute to JOHN ENTWISTLE, THE WHO's bassist who died last week of suspected heart failure, during their gig at BELFAST's ODYSSEY ARENA last night (June 30). Liam dedicated 'Live Forever' to Entwistle on the second night of their current UK tour. The band closed the set with what has now become an Oasis favourite, a cover of The Who's 'My Generation'.

In typical Oasis fashion, however, the bouquets were soon swapped for brickbats as Noel launched into a public tirade against a former NME hack in the photo pit. "See that guy down there taking photos?" he told the crowd, "He's the wanker from NME who started the BlurOasis thing. That's Stuart Bailie. You can take your camera and fuck off."

Liam then motioned as if to unzip his trousers as if to urinate on Bailie and threw a bottle of water at him.

This latest outburst shows that the band have never let go the BlurOasis argument. Noel was recently interviewed describing BlurDamon Albarn as a "c**tfuck" and dismissing the idea of any rivalry on his part: Oasis don't need to compete with a bunch of cunts who did A-Level music. They're fakers."

Noel, 35, blasts over-30s
[1 July 2002] The Sun online
NOEL GALLAGHER has branded most of PAUL McCARTNEY's songs "manure" and says JOHN LENNON's music was "rubbish" after he hit 30. The OASIS guitarist has also attacked the ROLLING STONES as a "mess". Gallagher - who is 35 - claims they were all past it a long time ago.

He said: "Paul McCartney, one of the best songwriters of all time, has only produced manure for the past 25 years.

gRock musicians over 30 only produce unimportant material.h

Noel has written half of Oasis's fifth album, Heathen Chemistry.

He says he will carry on writing - as a poverty-stricken teenager. He says: "I am rich now but for eight years I was unemployed and broke. You don't forget that too quickly."

TRUE TO HIS ROOTS
[1 July 2002] dotmusic
Noel Gallagher has revealed that he still draws his songwriting influences from being a "working class bloke from a council estate in Manchester". Despite his fame and huge personal fortune, Noel says that he will never write songs about having wealth and celebrity.

He also believes that rock stars over the age of 30 have nothing left to say, despite the fact that he himself has recently turned 35. Speaking to German magazine, Der Spiegel Noel said: "Rock musicians on the wrong side of 30 only ever write about trivial stuff. The Rolling Stones are rubbish nowadays and John Lennon and George Harrison only produced crap after they reached 30.

"There's only a handful of subjects it's actually worth writing about - love, anger, sex and drugs. And I often think when I'm writing new songs that I've already said it better before."

Oasis' new album has already received a mixed response from the media with many claiming that Noel Gallagher has run out of anything meaningful to say.

The album, 'Heathen Chemistry', is released today (July 1).
