Oasis accused fans of being thieving bastards at a show in the US on Friday, as they commented for the first time on the leaking of their new album. Internet users have been able to download 'Heathen Chemistry' for weeks, even though the completed record is not expected to be released for two months.

The Gallagher brothers, performing at the 1,400 capacity Rock Joint in Las Vegas, took the opportunity to comment on the latest example of internet piracy. Three times Liam and Noel made reference to the debacle, firstly when Liam introduced a new track - 'Force Of Nature' - with the comment: This is off our new album, you thieving bastards. Later, Liam used the same phrase before the group played another new song, 'Hung In A Bad Place', before Noel concluded the show with the words: Thank you all for coming and for stealing the f*cking album.

Oasis have been in the US to perform at the Coachella festival, alongside other UK acts such as the Prodigy, Belle and Sebastian and Elbow.

Oasis slag off Damon Albarn, again
[22 April 2002] NME
OASIS have re-enlivened their war of words with BLUR, branding frontman DAMON ALBARN a "cuntfuck". Band mainman Noel Gallagher has also ridiculed Albarn's huge-selling Gorillaz side project.

"The thing that still pisses me off to this day," he said, "is that cuntfuck said we engineered the battle with his bunch of wankers. Oasis don't need to compete with a bunch of cunts who did A-Level music. They're fakers." Of Gorillaz, he added: "All that 'I'm happy, feeling glad/got sunshine in a bag...'. That was beyond comedy. That cunt is like, 'Is there a bandwagon passing? Park it outside my house.' He'll be in a heavy metal band next year when it's fashionable. He's nothing. And it's fitting that he ended up as a cartoon. He always was a cartoon."

In the interview in the May edition of Q, Noel and Liam also lay into Radiohead, Pop Idol and their ex-wives amongst other subjects.

Oasis aren't bothered by leak
[22 April 2002] BBC Raio1
Oasis have achieved their sixth No.1 on the Official UK Top 40. 'The Hindu Times' beat Gareth Gates' 'Unchained Melody', ending the 'Pop Idol' reign of the chart. The new Oasis album, 'Heathen Chemistry', was recently leaked on the internet and a BPI investigator is now looking into it.

Speaking to Mark Goodier on Radio 1 yesterday, Noel Gallagher said he didn't really care that people can download it;

"I haven't actually heard the downloaded version but apparently it doesn't sound much cop anyway but you can get an idea of the songs. It doesn't bother me, do you know what I mean, it's like you can't stop that interest in the band. It's music man. I'm not saying it should be free or anything, but we are certainly not getting to the levels that the Manic Street Preachers do and start going round to people's houses and saying 'can we have our music back?' - I think that's just pathetic."

Their management company issued a statement saying they think the fact that 'Heathen Chemistry' is available on the internet is due to an illicit recording of early recordings. The finished album is expected to be released in July.

STATEMENT FROM IGNITION MANAGEMENT
[19 April 2002] Official Site
The MP3s of Oasis tracks in circulation on the net appear to be illicit recordings (probably made with a hidden Walkman or similar device) of early mixes of tracks for the band's new album, which were made some time ago. The recordings are of very poor quality and are not of the final album mixes. We hope anyone who has downloaded the tracks enjoys them but does not take them as any indication of the finished album which has come a long way since these recordings were made. In particular we would ask that music journalists do not use these tracks as the basis for album reviews as they are a very poor substitute for the finished record.

Liam Gallagher collaborates with Prodigy
[19 April 2002] NME
OASIS singer LIAM GALLAGHER has collaborated with PRODIGY on a new track which he claims could be a future single. Gallagher and Prodigy mainman Liam Howlett have become friends as they are both dating an Appleton sister. Gallagher said that they co-wrote the untitled song, which may be released later in the year.

"I've done something with the Prodigy and it might come out as a single." Liam told The Sun. "It's a tune we wrote together and Liam (Howlett) asked me to sing part of it. It's great.

"I hate dance stuff but this is a really good rock'n'roll song. I wasn't told how to do it. I did it my way."

Previously, Liam Howlett has said the pair had not been in the studio together. He commented: "Everybody keeps saying, 'Go on, get Liam on your LP', but we've never been in the studio together. We never talk about work, not me nor Liam or the girls."

The album, provisionally titled 'Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned', is likely to surface in the summer and could also feature a guest appearance from Perry Farrell.

Stereophonics 'not bothered' by 'Hindu Times'
[18 April 2002] BBC Radio1
Kelly Jones has been speaking to Radio 1 about the similarities between Oasis' 'Hindu Times' and Stereophonics' 'Same Size Feet'. Many people have pointed out how close the two tracks are, but Kelly doesn't seem particularly concerned;

"It does sound a little bit like it, but I'm not bothered by it. If it goes to No.1 on Sunday, maybe I'll give them another call. You've only got to listen to a few of our songs - we've borrowed a few off them as well, so we're evens."

'Hindu Times' is expected to take the No.1 spot from Gareth Gates on this Sunday's Official UK Top 40.

Exclusive - Oasis album leak probed by BPI
[16 April 2002] NME
Who leaked the new OASIS album?

That was the question buzzing around the music industry last week, after eHeathen Chemistryf ? not even out for three months ? was made freely available on the internet. This has prompted an international investigation by an anti-piracy expert at the BPI (British Phonographic Industry), who says it could have come from any number of sources within the band's inner circle.

Investigator Jollyon Benn has been tracking websites containing the MP3 downloads across the world, attempting to get the songs removed. He told NME.COM that, although he didn't think the record has been leaked intentionally, the security breach probably came from "further up the chain", rather than from a journalist - often blamed for album leaks.

He said: "It could be anybody, the band, the managers, people who work in the studio, pluggers, anybody that's been able to get their hands on this recorded work at this very early stage. It's more likely to be further up the chain than down our end really."

He said as word got out, the problem of illegal copying from the internet was soon "out of control".

He continued: "Monday (April 8) was the tip of the iceberg and we started to get a few trickles through. It was on about a dozen sites at the most and now it's absolutely exploded. Once the word gets out from people going to newsgroups and making postings on where you can find things, it mushrooms really. When someone has downloaded it they might make it available via file sharing and then someone else downloads it. It's gone from being a fairly small problem on Monday to being completely out of control by Friday."

Benn believes that the only way bands can avoid their album being made available online early is to keep tabs on who is given access to the songs, even at the highest levels.

Oasis gearing up for chart glory
[15 April 2002] NME
OASIS release their first single in almost two years today (April 15) and are hoping to knock GARETH GATES from the top of the UK singles chart. 'The Hindu Times', is the first song to be released from their forthcoming album 'Heathen Chemistry', the follow-up to July 2000's 'Sunday Morning Call'.

A chart expert has told NME.COM that the song has a good chance of success this week.

A spokesperson for Virgin Megastore said: "We think Oasis are almost certainly good enough to go to Number One this week. However, we don't expect it to sell as well as some of the band's singles have in the past."

An expert at HMV agreed. He said: "It's looking very good for Oasis to come storming back into the charts at Number One with 'The Hindu Times', and so earn the thanks of a grateful nation, as knock Gareth Gates off the top spot in the process. "Not surprisingly, there's been loads of interest from customers over the last few weeks, which should translate into sales over the next few days, particularly as this is the band's first release for ages. The main competition is likely to come from the brilliant Doves' 'There Goes This Fear', although it's limited edition format and is bound to have an effect on chart position."

Other new singles released today include New Order's 'Here To Stay', Doves' 'There Goes The Fear', Pulp's 'Bad Cover Version' and The Streets' 'Let's Push Things Forward'. All are expected to break into the Top 40.

In related news, Oasis have also confirmed two more European live dates, at the Barcelona Razzmatazz on June 19 and Berlin Columbiahalle (24).

Oasis play secret show in London
[12 April 2002] NME
OASIS performed live in LONDON last night (April 11) at a special filming for 'TOP OF THE POPS'. The group performed seven songs, including new single 'The Hindu Times', which will be shown on BBC1 tonight at 7.30pm.

They followed it with three songs from their forthcoming 'Heathen Chemistry' album, 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out', 'Force Of Nature' and 'Songbird'.

'Songbird', an acoustic tribute to Nicole Appleton penned by Liam, was well received by the 300 plus crowd, who had already seen Stereophonics and The Vines recording live. 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out', the sort of stadium ballad which Oasis do best, is the rumoured second single from the album. Judging by the audience's reaction it's a wise choice. The band closed with three live classics, 'Acquiesce', 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and a cover of The Who's 'My Generation'. The remaining songs will be broadcast at a later date by the show.

New Oasis tracks leaked on the Internet
[5 April 2002] NME
A handful of new OASIS songs have been leaked on the Internet, NME.COM has learned.

The Liam Gallagher-penned 'Songbird', rumoured future single 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out', the Noel Gallagher-sung 'She Is Love' and 'Little By Little', also sung by Noel are amongst the tracks currently circulating online.

Their new album, 'Heathen Chemistry', is not set for release until July. The new single, 'The Hindu Times', will be released on April 15.

Recently, Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher said he wasn't a fan of the Internet, as he thought it took the magic out of the music ? and their label Sony have previously threatened any unofficial websites with legal action if they breached any copyright laws regarding the band.

Noel told MTV recently: "Fast forward to today and therefs a webcam in the Radiohead studio while theyfre recording their album. And they write a diary. Therefs too much information going on herec I donft want to know how you make your records and I donft want you to know how I make my records. I donft want you to see me in the studio looking like an arse, having just got out of bed!

"The more information you give people, the more the magic goes out of the music. Webcams in studios I find appalling. Ours would be quite interesting as it goes, youfd just see a load of people sitting around drinking."

Fans will now see how the band's record label react to the leak. When songs from the Manic Street Preachers' last album 'Know Your Enemy' appeared on Napster, many fans who had downloaded songs had their accounts blocked after the band's record label Sony Music indicated that they planned to launch a breach of copyright lawsuit.

Watch Oasis' 'The Hindu Times' video in full
[4 April 2002] NME
"Their fifth album will be called, heroically, 'Heathen Chemistry'. The sessions started a year and a half ago when Liam, Gem, Andy, Alan and Johnny Marr (they share managers) booked a studio for ten days and, in a Noel-free zone, came up with a bunch of demos which according to Andy Bell, 'sounded like "The White Album"'.

"As well as 'The Hindu Times', the finished LP will include Gem's fearsome Stooges-like thrash 'Hung In A Bad Place' - as heard at the recent Watford and Albert Hall shows - a strident blues-howler called 'Force Of Nature' sung by Noel (complete with chorus 'I'm smoking all my stash/Burning all my cash') and a further pair of Noel penned tracks entitled 'Little By Little' and 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out'. There are also three songs written by Liam.

"Yes, you did read that right. Three songs. Forget the jibes about Oasis being Noel Gallagher's solo project, Liam's finally coming into his own, but why the wait?"

Find out in this week's NME (cover date April 06), out now, £1.30.
