Noel Gallagher reignites Starsailor feud
[28 Aug 2002] NME
NOEL GALLAGHER reignited his feud with STARSAILOR's JAMES WALSH at the READING FESTIVAL on Friday (August 23) telling NME.COM the 'cock' fight between them was "the most exciting time [WALSH] has ever had in his life." The fight between the pair began at T In The Park when Walsh approached Gallagher and asked him why he had called him a cock in an NME interview. Gallagher replied that he didn't remember calling him a cock but that if he did, he must be. Liam Gallagher became involved later that day and squared up to the Starsailor singer. Walsh has since kept the feud going during various live shows, most recently at V2002 in Chelmsford. From the stage, he delivered a message to Noel insisting it was "good to be nice".

"I don't remember calling him a cock in the press, but I think he was a bit pissed when he came up to me," Noel explained. "I'd just like to say to him that he's probably experienced the most exciting time he has ever had in his life, so good luck to him."

Special 'You cock!' badges were circulating the Festival site, celebrating the launch of NME's new 'feud' column. When NME.COM presented Noel one of the badges he laughed saying, "I'm fucking having that!" He wore it throughout his stay at Reading.

Noel Gallagher arrives at Reading to support Soundtrack Of Our Lives
[23 Aug 2002] NME
Noel Gallagher flew straight from a show in Detroit last night (August 22) to watch his "best new friends" Soundtrack Of Our Lives perform at Reading. He decided to make the trek on impulse when the current leg of Oasis US tour wound up and they all realised they wouldn't meet up again until a West Coast leg in January.

"Doing the gig last night with these lot [Soundtrack] it was cool man," he told NME.COM. "It was the first time they had ever been to Detroit and it was one of our crew's birthday and we had a big night. We're not going to see them again till January, so we said what you doing later and they said we're going to Reading.

"I said if you're going to Reading I'm going to come. And Liam says fuck that, I've got the kids. I says, fucking hell man, they're living it for us. I'm living my rock and dream from now on through them man."

Oasis had been due to resume the US leg in November but as Soundtrack couldn't make the shows, they decided to reschedule.

"They couldn't do it in November and we don't want to do it with anyone else. They're our new best friends in the whole world."

Noel said he has recovered from the car crash which led to the cancellation of dates a couple of weeks ago.

"People said it was loads more than it was. I wish it was how it was portrayed in the press - like I'd been dragged from the burning wreckage of a vehicle, but I'd a couple of black eyes and a few scratches round my neck and that. Five days of vicodin man. I'll tell you what man, it rocks my world." He added: We had to cancel three gigs. We have a motto that says the show must not go on. Even if I've got a scratch on the end of my fingernail then we're pulling gigs, you know what I mean."

Oasis and Manics sign up for NME War Child LP
[21 Aug 2002] NME
OASIS, STEREOPHONICS, MANIC STREET PREACHERS, BADLY DRAWN BOY and STARSAILOR are among artists who are entering studios around the world to record special cover versions for the forthcoming NME/WAR CHILD charity album, '1 LOVE'. The album, which is released in October on B-Unique via WEA, celebrates NME's 50th birthday and the anniversary of the world's first ever singles chart, which was launched in NME in 1952. Proceeds from sales of the album will go to War Child, the organisation which, for the last 10 years, has been actively providing aid to children whose lives have been devastated by war.

In 1995, War Child released the hugely successful 'HELP' album which raised the charity's profile for all the work it did during the Bosnian crisis. Acts who donated their time and music included Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Massive Attack, Radiohead and Blur. Each band recorded and delivered their song on the same day, and the album was released one week later. The album went on to raise 1.25 million pounds for the cause.

NME's Editorial Director Steve Sutherland said : "What we have here is a great combination of celebrations. NME is 50 this year, the chart was launched the year NME was founded and NME worked alongside Warchild to raise publicity for the original 'Help' album. So when it came to discussions about how we should mark our anniversary, we pretty quickly decided that, with the world in the state its in, we wanted to create something both useful and historic.

"With that in mind, we are delighted to announce news of the '1 Love' project with the full expectation that it will storm the charts and provide War Child with greater profile and, of course, vital funds. The idea is that today's top artists record a brand new version of one of their favourite number one hits of all time and, with literally hundreds of tracks to choose from, we fully anticipate that '1 Love' will be a truly extraordinary and landmark album.

"The calibre of artists already signed up is incredible and more acts are calling up to join in every day. In the last 24 hours, Basement Jaxx, Feeder, Ms Dynamite and Jimmy Eat World have all joined the project and there are some other real stunners in the pipeline."

The project is being executive produced by Spike Stent who is famous for his work with Madonna and Oasis among others. In order to hit our deadlines, all recordings must be delivered to Spike by the first week of September so there's still time for NME.COM readers to get involved. What we'd like you to do is e-mail us your top pick for '1 Love'. All we need is your name, age, address and which artist you'd like to see on the album covering which number one single from the last 50 years. Who knows? You may just get your dream track onto an album and help War child to rebuild the lives of innocent kids in war torn territories all over the world. Send your e-mails to news@nme.com.

NME will be providing weekly updates on the '1 Love' project and next week we will reveal more details of those participating and some of their stunning choices of cover versions.

[20 Aug 2002] Official Site
USA Tour dates postponed earlier this month due to certain band members being involved in a car smash in Indianapolis will go ahead early next year. Fans who possess tickets for the sold out shows in Indianapolis, Philadelphia and Boston should hold on to their tickets and await further information. HEATHEN LOGIC
[14 Aug 2002] dotmusic
Noel Gallagher has called the entire youth population of America "little immature idiots" as Oasis continue their bid to break America. In the latest flammable outburst from the guitarist and songwriter, Gallagher claimed the only good bands in America are The White Stripes and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Speaking to the New York Post, Noel said America's kids would "buy anything". He insisted: "Actually you shouldn't be able to buy records until you're 16. You'll buy any old nonsense. Britney Spears and Eminem. What's that all about?"

Noel also insisted that he found it impossible to be courteous to American music executives, and would rather not have a US Number One than be forced to associate with industry big-shots.

The new Oasis album, 'Heathen Chemistry', stands at Number 189 on the US chart. Music website worldpop reports that their market share in America has dropped from 36 per cent to 2 per cent in recent years.

Noel's bid to block single
[13 Aug 2002] The Sun
NOEL GALLAGHER is trying to stop a love song he wrote for ex-girlfriend SARA MacDONALD being released as a single. The OASIS star has been desperately ringing Sony bosses insisting they halt the track from going on sale next month. She Is Love, from the album Heathen Chemistry, was due to be a double A-side with Little By Little. But now the couple have split up, Noel has changed his mind. It means the single either won't come out or will be reduced to a B-side if it's too late to change production schedules.

On Sunday night, Noel made his live return at New York's Roseland Ballroom after the taxi crash that left him with whiplash, bruising and shock. He hid his heartache over Sara as brother LIAM presented him with flowers.

An Oasis source tells me: "Noel has been trying to stop the record but it looks like it's too late. "He really doesnft want She Is Love to be a single. "It is a very personal song that he wrote when he was in love. If it is released, it will cause even more pain for her. He doesnft want that."

Noel and Sara split up last week after their latest massive row, just days before the crash in the US. The pair had been dating for two years.

Noel wrote the song Wonderwall for ex-wife MEG MATHEWS but refused to play it again after they split up.

Coldplay star covers Oasis in front of Gallagher brothers
[13 Aug 2002] NME
CHRIS MARTIN covered OASIS' 'SONGBIRD' in front of NOEL and LIAM GALLAGHER at COLDPLAY's show in NEW YORK last night. The band performed a show at the New York Bowery Ballroom (August 12), part of a brief North American tour in support of their forthcoming second album 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. Oasis watched the show from the balcony, while fans also spotted actress Gwyneth Paltrow in attendance.

The band performed a set comprised of the highlights of 'Parachutes', as well as a selection of new songs. Of the new songs, Martin dedicated 'God Put A Smile On Your Face' to "anybody whofs been in a car accident recently" - a reference to Noel Gallagher, who was injured last week while Oasis were in the country on their own tour.

After finishing the encore, Martin returned to the stage and told the audience that the show was officially over. However, anyone who wanted to stay for a few fun surprises should. He then sat at the piano for his own version of the Liam Gallagher-penned 'Songbird' from 'Heathen Chemistry'. Fans say that Noel Gallagher jumped to his feet from the booth he was sitting in and whistled loudly and cheered as Martin performed the opening chords.

Oasis restart US tour in triumphant mood following last week's car crash
[12 Aug 2002] NME
NOEL GALLAGHER was given a hero's welcome as he led OASIS out to restart their US tour in New York last night (August 12) following last week's car crash.

He showed few signs of the facial bruising and whiplash he suffered in the smash, save for a little puffiness around the eyes and his brother Liam Gallagher marked the return presenting Noel with a bouquet of flowers onstage.

In Tuesday's (August 6) crash a taxi Noel, bassist Andy Bell and keyboard player Jay Darlington were travelling in hit another car head-on in Indianapolis. Noel was worst injured, but Darlington, who suffered hand injuries, didn't make last night's show. He was replaced by the keyboardist from support act Soundtrack Of Our Lives.

There was no mention of the smash until the encore when Noel said: "Well, you might have heard I had a little accident. You know how many get-well cards I got? Fuckin' one, I got... one." He then joked that "if this was 1995 and I was selling lots of records, then I'd be gettin' loads of good wishes. My record company didn't even send flowers." And right on cue, as 'Some Might Say' struck-up, Liam walked onstage with a bunch of flowers and presented them with a kiss.

"They smell like piss," joked Noel. "This must be where he's keepin' the drugs."

The show, in front of a 3,500 capacity crowed, found Oasis in triumphant mood. Liam wore a New York city tee-shirt and dedicated 'Live Forever' to the city. The set-list varied little from that the band have been working since the start of the summer.

Oasis car smash - taxi driver blamed by police
[9 Aug 2002] NME
Police have said OASIS' taxi driver was to blame for the car accident that left three band members, including NOEL GALLAGHER, injured and the forced postponement of three US shows.

Eyewitnesses at Tuesday's (August 6) accident, which saw the taxi Oasis members were in hit another car head-on at a busy Indianapolis junction, had claimed that the driver, Ghebriahiwet Foto, ran a red light. Now a police report into the accident has confirmed this.

In a brief statement to NME.COM, a spokesperson for the Indianapolis Police Department said: "The cab driver was at fault for disregarding a signal and failure to yield right of way. He wasn't issued a citation at the scene." Foto will not be charged with any driving offence.

Noel suffered heavy facial bruising, whiplash and shock in the smash. The injuries were severe enough to lead to the cancellation of three Oasis shows - Indianapolis (August 6), Philadelphia (August 9) and Boston (10). They are due to restart their sold-out US tour in New York's Roseland on August 11.

Bassist Andy Bell and keyboard player Jay Darlington were also passengers in the taxi, and while their injuries were less severe than Gallagher's, all three were taken by ambulance to the nearby Wishard Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Darlington suffered hand injuries and returned the following day for further treatment. Gallagher had been in the front passenger seat and bore the brunt of the impact. He was told by doctors to rest for three days following the smash.

OASIS IN CAR CRASH
[8 Aug 2002] The Mirror
NOEL Gallagher was recovering from facial injuries today after Oasis were involved in a head-on car crash in America. Guitarist Noel and band members Andy Bell and Jay Darlington were in a taxi which ploughed into another car at a busy junction.

Noel was in the front seat and was hit in the face by an air bag and bruised by his seat belt. Keyboard player Jay wasn't wearing a belt and was flung forward, injuring his fingers. Andy was shocked but unhurt. They were all taken to hospital by ambulance and the road, scarred with huge skid marks, was sealed off.

Noel's brother singer Liam, who was at the band's hotel at the time, said yesterday: "I spoke to him on the phone and he's just bruised up and stuff, you know what I mean, shaken. "He said it was a car crash. He turned back, looked up and it all happened."

The accident happened in Indianapolis where Oasis were last night due to play a sell-out gig at the Murat Centre.

Doctors told the three men to rest for two days and the concert has been cancelled.

The band, who are halfway throughout a US tour, had been going back to their hotel after visiting a guitar shop in downtown Indianapolis.

Jay, whose hand has been strapped up, was horrified by the crash. "We thought the car was going to explode," he said. "It was absolutely nuts. There was smoke in the car and the first thing we thought was, 'F***, we have got to get out'. "We thought it could explode or something. "It was chaos when we got out. It was shocking. Noel was the worst off out of all of us. He got bruised from the seat belt and he bashed his nose. "Andy is unscathed. I did not have a seatbelt on and I hurt my hand and smashed my nose into the seat. "I cannot play because my fingers are f****d up. "I didn't see how it happened. I wouldn't like to say whose fault it was. "The driver was saying the light was on green, wasn't it?"

The Gallaghers' mother Peggy, said from her home in Burnage, Manchester: "Thank God, they are all right. "Noel was taken to hospital, he was suffering from whiplash, but they are all fine. "Noel was a bit shaken up because he has got seatbelt bruises, but, thank God, he was wearing a seatbelt. "Liam was not with them, I assume he was probably in bed."

Oasis axe more shows
[8 Aug 2002] The Sun
OASIS yesterday cancelled two more US concerts as doctors revealed Noel Gallagher's car crash injuries are WORSE than feared.

The idol, 35 - a front passenger in a cab which ploughed into another motor - suffered severe whiplash, facial bruising and shock. Medics confirmed his injuries were "more chronic than originally thought".

Damage to the front of the cab showed how right-hand passenger Noel took the brunt of the impact as airbags went off.

The star - trapped by a jammed door - kicked his way out amid fears the taxi could catch fire.

Witnesses told police the driver, who was also taken to hospital, ran a red light. On the smashed cab's seat yesterday lay a taxi drivers' training manual.

Noel was last night recovering at his hotel in Indianapolis with bassist Andy Bell, 31, and keyboard player Jay Darlington, 34, who also cheated death.

Brother Liam, who was not in the cab, said: "He's lucky it wasn't worse but it was bad enough."

The Oasis frontman confirmed tonight's gig in Philadelphia and tomorrowfs in Boston had been postponed.

MORE OASIS CANCELLATIONS
[8 Aug 2002] dotmusic
In the wake of a head-on car crash involving three members of Oasis, including Noel, the band has been forced to cancel two more shows on their sell-out US tour. Doctors have discovered that Noel Gallagher's injuries, at first described simply as facial and body bruising, are "more chronic than originally thought." Noel is now said to be suffering from whiplash and shock in addition to serious facial bruising and has been ordered to rest for the next three days.

As reported yesterday (August 7) on dotmusic the band was lucky to escape relatively unscathed from a head-on collision as they travelled by taxi to an Indianapolis guitar shop.

Scheduled shows in Philadelphia (Friday) and Boston (Saturday) have been cancelled.

Noel was travelling with guitarist Andy Bell and keyboard player Jay Darlington who was also hurt but lead singer Liam Gallagher avoided injury because he had decided to stay back in the band's hotel.

Darlington has his hand strapped and is unable to play. He described the experience as "absolutely nuts."

"There was smoke in the car and the first thing we thought was f**k - we have to get out of the car. We thought it could explode or something. "It was chaos when we got out. It was shocking. Noel was the worst off out of all of us. He got bruised from the seat belt and he bashed his nose."

The accident is the latest in a line of setbacks hindering Oasis' US tour which has already seen Noel lose his passport and Liam struggle with his voice, forcing Noel to take over on the first night of the tour.

US TOUR UPDATE-Philly & Boston postponed
[8 Aug 2002] Official site
For immediate release PHILADELPHIA & BOSTON ALSO POSTPONED INDIANAPOLIS, WEDNESDAY AUGUST 7TH (5PM CENTRAL) A further Doctors examination of Noel Gallagher following yesterday's car accident established that his injuries are more chronic than originally thought. Noel is suffering from the effects of "whiplash" and shock. The Indiana University School of Medicine doctor prescribed further painkilling drugs, and ordered complete rest for the next three days, in order to lay the basis for as quick and complete a recovery as possible, and to prevent any long term or permanent effects from the accident. Consequently the next two scheduled shows of Oasis's sell out USA Tour, at Philadelphia Tower Theater this Friday 9th, and Boston's Fleet Pavilion on Saturday 10th, have had to be postponed. A decision on when these two shows can be rescheduled will be made early next week. The band fully intend to resume their USA Touring duties at at the Roseland in New York this Sunday evening August 11.

OASIS CAR SMASH IN "INDY"-SHOW POSTPONED
[7 Aug 2002] Official site
Three members of Oasis were involved in a car accident Tuesday afternoon in downtown Indianapolis. A taxi they were traveling in was involved in a head on collision with another vehicle. All three members: Noel Gallagher, Andy Bell & Jay Darlington were taken to hospital by ambulance, where they were treated for shock and cuts and bruises. Keyboard player Jay has his hand strapped and has to return to hospital on Wednesday for further treatment. Noel, who was traveling in the front of the car, has suffered heavy facial bruising, and seat belt cuts. Neither member is well enough to undertake the show at the Murat Theater in Indianapolis on Wednesday evening, and have been ordered by hospital doctors to fully rest for the next 48 hours to let their prescribed medication take full effect. Consequently their highly anticipated sold out show due at the Murat this evening (Wednesday) has to be rescheduled to another date. A spokesperson for the band said that the bands US Agent and the Muratfs Promoter will be talking first thing Wednesday about finding a date later this year when the show can possibly be rescheduled. He said he was very relieved that none of the injuries were more serious, with most of the cuts and bruises being caused by air bags & seat belt burns. Oasis would like to thank all their fans in Indianapolis for their understanding that the show canft take place this evening, and assure them that every effort will be made to return soon to play the Murat.

OASIS NO-SHOW IN CARDIFF
[5 Aug 2002] dotmusic
Contrary to rumours Oasis will not be playing the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on December 14, according to their manager Marcus Russell.

Rumours had been circulating that the Manc rockers would be playing a massive gig at the stadium that comes with a sliding roof. However Russell told The Western Mail, "I know that the Millennium Stadium is a place where the band would like to play but at the moment we're not even in talks about playing there."

Russell did say, however, that he was determined to bring Oasis to Cardiff by the end of the year. "One thing is certain, Oasis will play Wales before the year is out but reports saying where that will be are really very premature and lacking in foundation," he said.

As well as being manager of one of the biggest rock groups in the world Russell is also a director at the financially impoverished Ebbw Vale rugby club. A link between an Oasis gig at the Millennium Stadium and the rugby club's financial position have continued speculation that Russell is trying to broker a deal for the gig to go ahead.

But Russell has denied the claims saying, "That's nonsense. The Welsh Rugby Union and Rugby is the last thing I think about when I want to book Oasis."

Oasis US tour news

Oasis US tour got off to an eventful start in Fort Lauderdale last night when Liam's voice failed part way into the set, during Go Let It Out.

However, instead of stopping the show Noel stepped up to the mic in front of the sell out crowd at the 3,000 capacity open air Pompano Beach Amphitheater and delivered an amazing two hour performance, including a seven song acoustic set and an awesome full band version of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My". Fans who saw the show said it was incredible.

Liam's vocal problems are thought to be the result of the long plane flight to Florida and he is expected to be fine for tomorrow's show in Orlando.

I WON'T MARRY NOEL
[3 Aug 2002] The Sun
NOEL GALLAGHER's girlfriend SARA MacDONALD has ruled out marriage. The PR girl, who has dated Noel for two years, reckons she's "too childish" to marry and have kids. But Sara also confessed she was touched when the Oasis star wrote a song for her - She Is Love - on the bandfs new album.

She said: "I remember the day he told me and I got him to play it to me. It sounds really cheesy but it was the most romantic thing anyone's ever done for me."

And Sara has become good mates with Noel's brother LIAM and his girlfriend NICOLE APPLETON.

She said: "I won't hear a bad word against Liam. He's so bright, sharp as a tack and he'll have you in tears. "And Nic gets more beautiful the more you know her."

Meanwhile, Noel nearly didn't make the start of OASIS' US tour in Fort Lauderdale last night when he lost his passport. The US embassy rushed him a visa.

OASIS GANGLAND THREAT
[2 Aug 2002] The Sun
LIAM and NOEL GALLAGHER are worried they are on an underworld hitlist after a bust-up with a mob of Manchester gangsters.

The OASIS brothers had a bust-up with the hoodlums when they tried to take over security at one of the band's hometown gigs.

A gang member even threatened to kidnap Liam.

Noel said: "These guys walked into our dressing room and said, 'We're such and such family from Manchester and we're now your new bodyguards. We do everybody's security here in Manchester.

"I was like, 'Well, we don't live in Manchester. We live in London, so get f----d!'"

But Noel isn't taking the threats lightly.

He added: "They're serious people. They'll shoot you in the face.

"When we played in Manchester, there were threats Liam would be kidnapped. He got a bit freaked out."

Late visa scamble puts oasis US tour in jeopardy
[2 Aug 2002] NME
NOEL GALLAGHER threw the OASIS US tour into doubt this week when he lost his passport. He realised it was missing shortly before he was due to board a flight to the States yesterday (August 1) and had his blushes saved only by the speedy intervention of the US embassy which rushed him through a working visa. Though Gallagher had a spare passport locked in his management company's safe - as is the practise for many bands - he didn't have a working visa stamped on that passport. The issuing of the visa usually takes six weeks, which would have knocked him out of the entire US tour, due to kick off tonight in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

"These things can take up to six weeks but the Embassy were real troopers," a spokesperson told NME.COM. "They were so quick getting back with the visa. If they hadn't been so quick, we don't know what the band would have done."

The 13-date US and Canada tour rounds off in Detroit on August 21 before Oasis return to Europe for a number of shows, starting in Derry on September 7. They then head to Japan and Australia, the dates running to the end of October.

OASIS OZ BAN THREAT
[1 Aug 2002] dotmusic
Oasis are set to return to Australia to play three dates for the first time since their infamous tour of 1998. However an Australian union is fighting to stop the wild rockers using any airlines at all.

The band have been pencilled in for the following dates:

Bisbane RNA Showgrounds - October 12
Melbourne Park - October 19
Sydney Moore Park - October 20

The 1998 trip saw Liam Gallagher banned from the airline Cathay Pacific after allegedly abusing passengers and crew on a flight from Perth to Hong Kong.

On hearing of the band's return to Australia the Australian Services Union (ASU) claimed they will try and make sure the band never leave the ground.

ASU secretary Linda White told the Australian Herald Sun newspaper: "Serial offenders do not change their spots. Oasis should not be allowed to board a plane, basically."

"It is not acceptable that one airline can take passengers that another airline has banned for life because it just perpetuates the problem," she added.

Meanwhile, Noel Gallagher claims the band have "unfinished business" in Australia.

"We have to go back, if that's the only time we ever go, it cannot be left like that. We've got unfinished business.

"I have to say in our defence it was the end of a nine-month world tour and I think everyone was verging on alcoholism. There were a lot of drugs about, I was nearly 13kg overweight. But you live and learn."

Few of the tracks are more than ten years old.

The 15 most played tracks on MTV in the UK and Ireland are as follows:
  1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
  2. Wonderwall - Oasis
  3. Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
  4. Sabotage - Beastie Boys

Oasis return to Australia
[1 Aug 2002] NME
OASIS will be returning to Australia for the first time since 1998 to play the LIVID FESTIVAL in October. The group played their only Australian dates in February and March 1998, when they were touring third album 'Be Here Now'. Now they will return to play shows at:
Brisbane RNA Showgrounds (October 12)

The band's previous trip to the continent landed them in hot water when Liam Gallagher was banned from airline Cathay Pacific after allegedly abusing passengers and crew on a flight to Perth from Hong Kong.

However, Noel Gallagher recently told the Australian Herald Sun newspaper that the "rotten" gigs the band played last time around mean he considers Oasis have "unfinished business" down under.

He said: "We were rotten every night we played. It was awful. When we started to draw a plan of action for this year I said, 'We've got to go back to Australia', and everyone was like, 'Why? We didn't have a good time last time'. "And I said, 'We have to go back, if that's the only time we ever go, it cannot be left like that'. We've got unfinished business. I have to say in our defence it was the end of a nine-month world tour and I think everyone was verging on alcoholism. There were a lot of drugs about, I was nearly 13kg overweight. But you live and learn."

Oasis head off to the US this month. More UK dates follow in September, followed by a trip to the Far East. before they move on to Australia. The band release a new double A-side single, 'Little By Little'/'She Is Love', on September 16.
