CARAVAN

源流は Soft Machine と同じく、The Wilde Flowers。ジャズ色はあまりなく、ポップな音でメロディも美しく聴きやすい。 Richard Sinclair と Pye Hastings という二人の魅力的なヴォーカリスト／作曲者を擁した初期はサイケ・ポップだったが、リチャードが抜けると、Soft Machine がどんどんジャズ寄りになっていったのとは逆に、どんどんＡＯＲ的ポップスに近付いていく。 80年代は解散状態だったが、90年以降活動が活発化し、ライヴ盤も数種出している。
初心者はＢＢＣライヴ２組（「Songs for Oblivion Fishermen」「Ether Way」）をベスト盤代わりに聴いても良いだろう。

アルバム・タイトルがやたらと長いが、邦題は「キャラヴァン登場」（笑）。サイケ味を残しつつも、より個性的なキャラヴァン・サウンドを確立し始めたセカンド・アルバム。最もキャラヴァンらしいアルバムと言えるかもしれない。 パイがワイアットそっくりに歌う７拍子ポップスのタイトル曲や、ライヴの定番となる "For Richard" もいいが、ジャケットからも伺える牧歌的な優しい雰囲気が漂う "And I Wish I Were Stoned/Don't Worry" が特に好き。

３枚目のオリジナル・アルバムにしてカンタベリーを代表する名盤。邦題「グレイとピンクの地」。Ｂ面を占める大曲 "Nine Feet Underground" では Dave Sinclair のオルガンが大活躍していて聴き応え充分。

Matching Mole への加入のため脱退した Dave Sinclair の代わりに、元 Delivery の Steve Miller がキーボードを担当した唯一のアルバム。スティーヴの弟 Phil Miller、親友 Lol Coxhill（共に元 Delivery）もゲスト参加。そのためか他の Caravan のアルバムとは色合いが違って、オルガンよりもエレピの音色が目立ち、ややジャズ寄り。とは言え、相変わらずポップな面も健在で、"The Love In Your Eye" ではシンフォニックな方向性も見せ始める。"Songs and Signs" のメロディは Steve Miller が Lol Coxhill と両面を分け合ったＬＰ「Coxhill/Miller. Miller/Coxhill.」(Caroline C 1503, 1973) の "Chocolate Field" と同じもの。
