Announcement about the 35th meeting
of
the Society for Music Theory of Japan
(October, 6th)
Please share this news!

Dear friends,
We are happy to announce about the upcoming 35th meeting of the Society for Music Theory of Japan.
Please find the program of our meeting below.

In the first half of the meeting,  Ms. Tomoko Iwakawa will share with us the results of her analysis of "Prélude et fugue en sol mineur" (1948, the Japan Music Competition award). This piece of music was composed by Prof. Yuzuru Shimaoka at his age of 22. Today Prof. Shimaoka is known as the Chairman of our Society, who has contributed to developing music theory, especially of harmony in Japan and taken it to the international level. The original arrangement of "Prélude et fugue en sol mineur" for orchestra seems to have been lost; however, some sketches were found out over time, and this piece of music was rearranged for orchestra by Mr. Tatsuya Hayashi. In 2018, 70 years after "Prélude et fugue en sol mineur" was played live again. Many people were fascinated by the completeness and romantic nature of this piece of music! On the day of our meeting we are going to play back the recording of that performance. Do not miss it!
In the second half of the meeting, you will hear an analysis of some works related to Duke Ellington (both his own compositions and those written in collaboration with other composers) such as “Take the 'A' Train”. The analysis will be presented by me, Jun Mikami, in collaboration with a specialist on popular music, Akitsugu Kawamoto. I will present my analysis based on Shimaoka’s theory, while Mr. Kawamoto will share his interpretation and opinion based on American music theory. Although our analysis might still be far from being a complete one, we would like to have a comprehensive and fruitful discussion looking at the same works from different perspectives, and we would hope strongly the audience to take an active part in it.
After that, all the three speakers will participate in a round table. The speakers and the participants of the meeting will talk about the prospects of music theory, bearing in mind the contents of the presentations.
We are looking forward to your participation!
