Starsailor played the first in a series of UK club shows in Edinburgh last night (October 3) ahead of their third album's 'On The Outside''s release on October 17.
Among the 16-song set at the city's Venue were five tracks taken from the new album, including new single 'In The Crossfire', 'Counterfeit Life', 'Way Back Home', 'Keep Us Together' and 'This Time' . Singer James Walsh said he was happy to be playing in such an intimate setting, saying: "It's great to be in a venue this size again. It reminds us of when we were starting out at places like the Manchester Roadhouse ." The set also included a solo acoustic cover of 1988 Top Ten hit 'Somewhere In My Heart' by Scottish band Aztec Camera . Walsh explained this was to make up for a competition winners' gig at Glasgow King Tut's the previous month, where he covered Oasis ' 'Champagne Supernova' as he couldn't think of a song by a local band to perform. King Tut's was famously the venue where Creation Records boss Alan McGee discovered Oasis . The club tour continues at Manchester Jabez Clegg tonight (October 4), then Birmingham Irish Centre on October 6 and Bristol Bierkeller on October 7. Starsailor 's full national tour starts on October 30 at Liverpool Carling Academy . The setlist last night was: 'Counterfeit Life' 'Poor Misguided Fool' 'Alcoholic' 'Fever' 'Way Back Home' 'Four To The Floor' 'This Time' 'Telling Them' 'Somewhere In My Heart' 'Love Is Here' 'Fidelity' 'Keep Us Together' 'Tie Up My Hands 'Good Souls' 'In The Crossfire' 'Silence Is Easy' The band's full UK tour calls at: Liverpool Carling Academy (October 30) Newcastle Carling Academy (31) Glasgow Carling Academy (November 1) Leeds University (3) Manchester Carling Apollo (4) Sheffield Octagon (5) Cambridge Corn Exchange (7) Birmingham Carling Academy (8) Folkestone Leas Cliff Hall (10) Norwich UEA (11) Cardiff University (13) Bath Pavilions (14) Nottingham Rock City (15) Oxford Brookes University (17) London Carling Brixton Academy (18) UK tour announced 16 Sep 2005 [Official Site]

STARSAILOR's third album is set to be their most political yet.
The album, the follow-up to 2003's 'Silence Is Easy', is set for release later this year. Speaking to Rolling Stone singer James Walsh said that the untitled record is more "outward looking". He said: "[The new record] is more outward-looking, more influenced by what's going on in the world. You go into the vocal booth and think that this has got to be as pure and pristine as Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley - but with the aggression and rock & roll attitude of Liam Gallagher. Trying to find that balance can be like trying to achieve the impossible, but you've got to go for it." Starsailor to play Somerset House 2 Jun 2005 [Official Site]

TIM BURGESS celebrated the US release of his solo album in LOS ANGELES last night by performing a gig with members of STARSAILOR as his band.
Burgess' set at the Viper Room club drew an all-star crowd that included Robbie Williams as well as Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwan and Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody. Performing for almost an hour, Burgess used members of Starsailor, who are in LA recording their third album, as his backing band. The tiny club was jam packed with fans from the UK and the US, in town for this weekend's Coachella music festival. "I think of this as a pre-Coachella gig, with me at the top of the bill," the singer joked during his set. In addition to performing tracks 'Oh My Corazon' and 'I Believe in the Sprit' ff his new record, Burgess performed three Charlatans tunes including 'North Country Boy', which he dedicated to his bandmates in Britain. STARSAILOR have become unlikely chart stars in France - selling records in volumes that would make them chart-toppers back home.
The four-piece went to Number One across the channel just before Christmas with a Jacques Le Cont remix of single 'Four To The Floor'. The track has topped sales of 400,000. Such sales would easily outstrip any other releases in Britain. The success of the single has upped demand for album 'Silence Is Easy' amongst Gallic fans. It has been re-released and has sold 50% more than in the previous 18 months of release. "Itfs really great. It has come totally out of the blue," said frontman James Walsh. "I always knew the French were a nation with really great taste." Walsh also revealed that he has a bank of songs ready for the bandfs third album. They will start recording in mid-spring, though there is no release date yet. Starsailor frontman joins Belfast fundraising show for Asian Tsunami victim 9 Jan 2005 [NME]
