STARSAILOR invited NME.COM into the studio last week for an exclusive preview of their contribution to the NME War Child album, '1 LOVE'.
The album, due for release next month, will feature cover versions of bands' favourite Number One singles of all time. Stars on board so far include Oasis, Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers, Prodigy, Jimmy Eat World, Sugababes, Ms Dynamite, Feeder and Badly Drawn Boy. The album will also include a unique collaboration between Dido Faithless. NME.COM went into the studio to see Starsailor record their contribution to this unique album. After several days of indecision, the band finally agreed on a cover version of 'All Or Nothing' by the Small Faces. The single was Number One for one week only way back in August 1966 after knocking The Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby' off the top spot. Starsailor recorded the track at Wessex studios in London. Manic Street Preachers producer Dave Eringa worked on the song with the band and waived his usual fee. Frontman James Walsh commented simply: "It sounds great!" The other Number One single Starsailor seriously considered was S Club 7's 'Don't Stop Movin'. The band have previously performed a cover of the song on Radio 1. '1 Love' is being put together in the same spirit as War Child's 1995 'Help' album, which raised considerable funds and awareness for the charity which supports kids caught in war zones around the world. War Child LP 21 Aug 2002 [NME]
OASIS, STEREOPHONICS, MANIC STREET PREACHERS, BADLY DRAWN BOY and STARSAILOR are among artists who are entering studios around the world to record special cover versions for the forthcoming NME/WAR CHILD charity album, '1 LOVE'.
The album, which is released in October on B-Unique via WEA, celebrates NME's 50th birthday and the anniversary of the world's first ever singles chart, which was launched in NME in 1952. Proceeds from sales of the album will go to War Child, the organisation which, for the last 10 years, has been actively providing aid to children whose lives have been devastated by war.
The project is being executive produced by Spike Stent who is famous for his work with Madonna and Oasis among others. V2002 17 Aug 2002 [NME]
Starsailor covered the Elvis Presley classic 'Can't Help Falling In Love' as an introduction to their own 'Love Is Here'.
Their performance was otherwise similar to their secret gig in Manchester last night, including the Phil Spector produced 'Silence Is Easy'. Elsewhere, Walsh dedicated the single 'Alcoholic' to his new daughter, born earlier in the month.
Starsailor play Phil Spector produced new song at secret gig 17 Aug 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR debuted their new material at an exclusive fans-only show in MANCHESTER last night (August 16). The show, at the Life Cafe, was attended by around 300 competition winners who had applied through local station Century Radio, and websites, including NME.COM.
Also in attendance were Doves' Jimi Goodwin, Elbow and former Primal Scream singer Denise Johnson. It served as a warm-up for the band's appearances at the V2002 festival this weekend.
The band performed a new song, 'Silence Is Easy', which, as previously reported on NME.COM, they are recording with legendary producer Phil Spector. The track is in the heavier vein of 'Poor Misguided Fool' and features the chorus refrain, "silence is easy, it just becomes me". During the show, signer James Walsh made light of his recent 'spat' with Oasis, joking, "Noel Gallagher was complaining that nobody's sent him any flowers (after his car crash in the US). I'll send you some! Ever since his brother called me a twat, my profile's gone through the roof! I’d never been in The Sun, The Star and The Mirror before! Cheers Liam!" The full set-list was: Fever Alcoholic Poor Misguided Fool Lullaby Silence Is Easy Love Is Here Born Again Way To Fall Tie Up My Hands Stand By Me Good Souls Starsailor play the main stage at the V2002 festivals, at Weston Park, Staffordshire today (August 17) and Hylands Park, Chelmsford tomorrow (August 18). Starsailor record with Phil Spector 13 Aug 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR have recorded two tracks with legendary producer PHIL SPECTOR, becoming the first act to work with him in almost 20 years.
The quartet spent a week with the reclusive great in a west London studio during mid-July. The sessions resulted in two brand new tracks, one called 'Silence Is Easy' and the other untitled. So intent were management on both sides in keeping the location a secret that Starsailor were not told for sure which studio would be used until the recording began.
Starsailor frontman Walsh told NME.COM he was delighted with the results. "It was amazing being there with him," he said. "The songs sound great. It could not have gone better - it was just incredible." He added that while discussions had been held with Spector about him producing the entire new album -the follow-up to debut 'Love Is Here' - nothing had been settled or agreed yet. Walsh said the songs were a leap forward from those on 'Love Is Here'. Starsailor first met Spector in January during their US tour. He went along to their show at the Los Angeles Palace and declared himself a fan of the band. He invited them to his castle in the LA hills, where they spent two hours in talks about him working on new Starsailor recordings. Aside from occasional work with Yoko Ono and Eric Clapton, Spector last produced an album in 1980 when he helmed The Ramones' 'End Of The Century'. Spector invented the Wall Of Sound production that dominated early 1960s pop. He influenced a generation of bands including The Beatles and the Beach Boys. His techniques for getting the best out of his artists include, as John Lennon alleged, pulling a gun. Meanwhile, Starsailor will release a live DVD and video 'Love Is Here Live' on September 9. Documenting the band's history to date and includes a live show recorded at the London Forum on November 1 last year. Starsailor play the V festival on August 17-18, before returning to the studio work on their new album in the autumn. And frontman James Walsh and his girlfriend Lisa McNamee have given birth to their first child, a little girl. She was born early on Friday morning (August 9) in London. Mother and baby are healthy and well. Starsailor to play tiny V2002 warm-up gig 25 July 2002 [NME]

Oasis and Starsailor in bust-up backstage at T In The Park festival 14 July 2002 [NME]
OASIS and STARSAILOR were involved in a backstage fight yesterday (July 13) at T In The Park after Starsailor frontman James Walsh asked Noel Gallagher about a remark he made about him recently in the NME.
Liam Gallagher became involved and was physically restrained by one of his security guards after the spat degenerated into a near brawl. The rock 'n roll row began in mid-afternoon when Walsh approached Noel and asked him why he had called him "a cock" in a recent interview. Noel replied: "I don't know what you're talking about. But you must be a cock then and by the way, you're wearing my t-shirt." Within minutes, frontman Liam became involved. "Liam came over and squared up to me," Walsh told NME.COM this morning (July 14), "He puffed up his little pigeon chest and said: 'Don't ever interupt my brother's interview again [Noel had been doing a number of interviews in the backstage area at the time]. If someone says you are a cock, then you are one. That's it.' He then got his security guards over and one held him back while I was talking to another one. It all just got a bit out of hand." Walsh said he thought the entire thing was "quite funny". "I was a huge fan of Oasis," he added, "We're a band who were inspired by them. It tarnishes the spirit of it." Oasis could not be reached for comment this morning. Both bands move from T In The Park to the Witnness Festival just outside of Dublin today. Security is bound to be high in a bid to keep the both camps apart. Despite the row, Walsh described Starsailor's appearance at the festival as "amazing - it was better than Glastonbury." Starsailor are set to record their new album with legendary producer Phil Spector.
The northern quartet met the normally reclusive star during a tour of the US earlier this year when Spector invited the band back to his house after a gig at the LA Palace, and have since arranged to record some tracks together.
"We met him in LA after one of our shows, and went round his house - which was actually a castle," Starsailor frontman, James Walsh, told Xfm. "He hasn't done anything since working with The Ramones so it was a massive honour to work with him. We'll do one song with him and see how it goes. It might not work but then again it might." Spector has previously worked with the likes of John Lennon, Ike and Tina Turner, George Harrison, The Ronnettes and The Ramones. He is considered one of the world's finest ever producers and has been credited with inventing the wall of sound style of recording which first emerged in the 60s. His methods of working are far from standard, however, and he has previously been reported to have brandished a loaded gun to encourage some of his acts to perform. Starsailor, meanwhile, are beginning to earn themselves an enviable reputation for working with the best in the industry. During their performance at this weekend's Glastonbury Festival they were joined onstage for two songs by Donovan and earlier this year the band worked with current alt-country favourite, Ryan Adams. It is as yet unclear which songs Spector and Starsailor will work on for the album, although the band's official website suggests that a track called 'Silence is Easy' will appear on the record. Starsailor perform at Glastonbury with festival legend 29 Jun 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR performed with "Glastonbury legend" DONOVAN during their performance on the PYRAMID STAGE this afternoon.
The group brought out the veteran songwriter for a duet of his track 'Caught In The Wind'. Introducing him, singer James Walsh said that he considered Donovan a "legend" of the festival. Following the duet, he stayed on stage with the band and played harmonica on 'Born Again'. The rest of Starsailor's set, which took place in the late afternoon, was comprised of songs from their acclaimed debut album 'Love Is Here'. A playful Walsh also found time to cover the White Stripes' 'Hotel Yorba' for the people waiting for them to follow his band on the Pyramid Stage. Starsailor recently played in Hamburg, where they debuted a new song 'Silence is Easy'. The track, which was also played at Pink Pop in Holland this week, looks set to appear on the new album, and will be recorded when the band enter the studio to begin work on the follow up to "Love is Here". Starsailor play surprise London show 25 Jun 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR played an impromptu show last night (June 24) in central LONDON's HEAVENLY SOCIAL, ahead of their GLASTONBURY slot this weekend. The band, performing without keyboard player Barry Westhead, took to the stage around 11pm to round off the club's Acoustic Evening.
Using borrowed instruments and apologising for being unrehearsed, they played a set in front of a crowd of 40 people, with just a handful of their own songs, rounded out with covers of tracks by Fred Neil ('Dolphins'), Harry Nilsson ('Everybody's Talkin'), Neil Young ('Hey Hey, My My'), Wings ('Band On The Run') and closing with The Beatles' 'Let It Be'.
The band head out to Denmark later this week to play at the Roskilde Festival, before jetting back for their show on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury on Saturday (June 29). News From Official Site 19 Jun 2002 [Glastonbury website]

Starsailor frontman covers S Club 7 20 Feb 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR frontman JAMES WALSH performed a cover of the S CLUB 7 anthem 'DON'T STOP MOVIN' on national radio earlier today (February 20). Walsh made a solo appearance on Jo Whiley's Radio 1 show. As part of his slot he performed the track, which topped the UK charts for the teen sensations last spring.
Both Starsailor and S Club 7 are nominated at this evening's Brit Awards. The station asked Walsh to cover another nominee. Sources close to the singer told NME.COM that he was also considering versions of Kylie Minogue's 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' or 'Spinning Around' singles, but thought better of it.
Walsh is not the first star to cover a pop act. Fellow 'British Newcomer' nominees Elbow recently covered Destiny's Child's 'Independent Women (Part 1)'. The track is currently available via the group's official website, www.elbow.co.uk .

Starsailor debut new track and introduce gospel singers to NME Carling show 5 Feb 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR debuted a new song, 'BORN AGAIN', last night (February 8) during their headlining set at the NME CARLING show at the London Astoria. The band also introduced two backing singers and a cellist to a set that left them in exuberant mood.
Frontman James Walsh told NME.COM after the show that he thought the gig was "amazing, something really special" while bassist James Stelfox said it was "one of the greatest ever." Walsh had started the gig telling the audience he had a few suprises up his sleeve because he felt the band had something to prove. He was referring to the two gospel singers and cellist. The vocalists, who added a Staples Singers Stax feel to some of Starsailor's best known tracks including 'Fever' and 'Lullaby', also featured on 'Born Again', as they do on the recorded version. The new track, an epic reminiscent of 'Northern Soul'-era Verve, is due to appear as a B side on forthcoming single 'Poor Misguided Fool'. Starsailor and Ryan Adams duet at NME Carling Show 5 Feb 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR vocalist JAMES WALSH joined RYAN ADAMS onstage last night (February 4) at their NME CARLING SHOW at the LONDON ASTORIA. As previously revealed on NME.COM, alt-country rock 'n' roller Adams and Walsh met up in December in London to work on new material together for a future project.
The pair, who shared a bill with Travis and Remy Zero dueted on a new, as yet untitled track written by the pair. The song, a slow, emotive ballad, was performed by Adams on piano and lead vocals, with Walsh slightly nervously adding texture to the chorus with his voice. The only other instruments were cello and violin.
The song came at the end of an acoustic set from Adams, where he also premiered a second new song, titled 'World War 24'. Starsailor, who performed before Adams, comprised their set of songs from debut album 'Love Is Here', also added an unreleased song to their set, titled 'Some Of Us'.
The charity event, the first in two weeks of NME Carling Shows at the Astoria was in aid War Child. Headlined by Travis, the Scottish band entertained the 1,500 capacity crowd with a greatest hits set that included their classic singles 'Writing To Reach You', 'Sing' and new single 'Flowers In The Window'. The NME Carling Shows continue this evening at the Astoria (February 5), headlined by Ash, Hundred Reasons, Soundtrack Of Our Lives and Jet Plane Landing. The gig has sold out. Starsailor joined onstage by The Charlatans in New York 30 Jan 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR were joined by THE CHARLATANS's TIM BURGESS, MARK COLLINS and TONY ROGERS onstage in NEW YORK last night (29 January) for a surprise performance of BOB DYLAN's classic 'IT'S ALL OVER NOW, BABY BLUE' .
After Starsailor finished their opening set at a sold-out Irving Plaza they left the stage, only to return, unusually for an opening band, for an encore. They were quickly followed out by the three Charlatans, however, who received a huge reaction from the crowd, as soon as it became clear what was going on.
Burgess and Starsailor frontman James Walsh, both Dylandevotees, shared lead vocals on the rollicking rendition of the track, trading off verses with one another, with Burgess also dropping in his harmonica. Afterwards, The Charlatans went on to perform their own headlining set, spotlighting material off their recent 'Wonderland' album, as well as songs from throughout their decade-plus career.
The Charlatans and Starsailor wrap up their month-long North American tour with two more dates, tonight (January 30) at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC and tomorrow (January 31) at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia. >> Photes from N.Y. gig - rollingstone.com Poor Misguided Fool 24 Jan 2002 [Official site]

Great news from the US 'Love Is Here' moves up to #145 in the Top 200, up to #3 in the Heatseekers chart and stayed at #1 in the altnerative new artist chart in it's second week! Starsailor singer perfects his Strokes impersonation 17 Jan 2002 [NME]
STARSAILOR's JAMES WALSH has been perfecting his impression of THE STROKES during his band's US tour. During their recent San Francisco Fillmore stop (January 15) Starsailor were plagued by shouts for the band to play 'Last Nite'.
"This bloke is talking about a show we had in Birmingham where we played 'Last Nite' by The Strokes," he said. "But I'm not playing another Strokes song until they cover one of ours. Could you imagine?"
Walsh, reports thetripwire.com, then strapped his guitar very high on his chest in the style of Strokes' guitarist Albert Hammond Jr and spat and drawled his way through 'Lullaby' in what was seen to be an impression of The Strokes' frontman Julian Casablancas. Starsailor are currently supporting The Charlatans on their US tour. The Strokes will be the musical guest when actor Jack Black hosts Saturday Night Live this weekend (January 19).
