Q. What equipment do you use to play in concert and in the recording studio? Do you mostly play a Stratocaster?
ステージやレコーディングの時に使用している器材は何ですか?また、Stratocaster を主に使っているのですか?
A. I use a variety of Strat setups, and occasionally a Telecaster for a little different sound. I use Fender amps -- Deluxe Reverbs -- in the studio. Right now, on stage, I use a Fender Hot Rot Deville with 410's and also a Telemaster on occassion this trip. In Japan I use Marshalls sometimes or Roland amplifiers. I use a reverb pedal or a chorus pedal sometimes. I use 9 to 42 guage strings.
いろいろなStratocasterをつかいますが、違ったサウンドが欲しい時はTelecasterを使います。アンプは、スタジオではFenderのDeluxe Reverbsを使います。今回の旅行(ツアー?)のステージではFenderのHot Rot Deville 410と、Telemaster、日本公演ではMarshallとかRolandのアンプを使います。それにリバーブやコーラスのイフェクターもたまに使います。弦のゲージは009〜042です。
Q.You use a thumb pick and two fingers when you are playing the guitar?
ジェリーは、サムピックを使ったスリーフィンガーで演奏するのですか?
A. Yes, I do, I play finger style guitar so I do use a thumb pick. When I play bass I use a straight pick.

Q.You play guitar, bass guitar and electric sitar. Are there any other instruments you play?
ジェリーはギター、ベース、エレキシタールを演奏しますね。ほかに、どのような楽器を演奏しますか?
A. I play a little bit of banjo, and harmonica. I play accordian, too. My father, Denus McGee, was a famous cajun musician who recorded in the twenties, so I've kind of like rediscovered my roots by playing accordian. When I visit Louisiana we get together and play a little bit. When I was a kid growing up in Louisiana we all spoke Cajun French and anybody who was outside of Louisiana and didn't speak French were called Americans.

Q. Who are some of your Rock and Roll heroes?

A.Oh, people like Elvis and the Everly brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis and Rick Nelson. I got to play with all those people, and it exceeded my expectations for my career to be able to play and record with them.

Q. How would you describe your finger picking style?

A.Well, its a combination of country blues, rock, and rockabilly, just about anything you want to throw in. I kind of tried to incorporate the Chet Atkins style with all those types of music.

Q. What input did you have into the design of the Fender Ventures model Stratocaster?

A. I wanted the lace sensor pickups. I have a Clapton model Strat and I like the electronics in it, so I requested the same sort of setup for the Ventures model.

Q. When did you play guitar with Ricky Nelson? James Burton's style is very similar to yours.

A. James and I are from the same part of the country. James is from northern Louisiana and musicians from that part of the country have certain similarities. I met James in 1959 when I was living in Shreiveport. He said that I should think about coming out to California, and the next year I followed him out there. I think it was 1966 that I recorded with Rick. I don't think James was playing with him any more. I went on the road with Rick for about three weeks the year before he died. I think it was '84 or '85. He was a nice man and I always enjoyed his music.
Jamesとは同じLouisianaの出身なのですが、Jamesを含めてLouisiana北部出身のミュージシャンは大体同じ様なプレイスタイルです。Jamesとは私がShreiveportに住んでいた1959年に初めて会いましたが、Jamesは私にCaliforniaに出てくるように言いました。そして翌年私はCaliforniaに行きました。Rickとは確か1966年に一緒にレコーディングしましたが、それ以後JamesとRickが共演したことはないと思います。またRickが亡くなる前年、1984年か85年頃ですが、Rickと３週間程ツアーに同行しました。Rickはいい奴で私はいつもRickの音楽を楽しんでいました。
Q.Is there any particular song that you like to play in concert?

A. I like to play Classical Gas. It's probably the most complex song that we do.

Q.Lets talk about Born in Louisiana a minute. We feature I Want to Go to Tokyo on the Website. What are your favorite songs from the album?

A.I wasn't going to put I Want to Go to Tokyo on the album because its not very bluesy, but the Japanese very much wanted it on the album. My favorite tracks are the two Robert Johnson songs.

Q.When you first joined the Ventures in 1968, did they adapt to your style or were they leaning toward a more bluesy sound to keep up with what was happening musically at the time?

A.I don't think there was any planning or anything, I think it was just coincidental and everything just fell into place.

Q. You used to play with Sandy Nelson, didn't you?

A.Yes, I met Sandy in 1961 I think. I hadn't seen him for 2 or 3 years, and then in 1965 he asked me if I'd like to help him write some songs. He had a little studio in garage in Hollywood. I kind of kept in touch over the years. I liked Sandy a lot.

Q. What did you think of Jimi Hendrix?

A. He was really a great guitar player. He covered it up with a lot of sound effects that didn't really give him a chance to showcase his talent.

A. Clapton was really at his peak, I think, when he was with Cream. I think he was a much better player then than he is now.

A. Bizarre. He was very talented musically, but way out there somewhere.

A. A lot of jazz guitarist. Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass. I'm kind of trying to get into jazz playing some, so I'm listening to a lot of those guys right now.

Q. When you first started playing with the Ventures, did you think it would last this long?

A.Gosh, no, its a phenomenon. I thought everyone would have retired by now. Look, my father played all his life, right up to when he was 96. Who knows how long we'll keep on.
