97年にサン・ディエゴで活動を始めたroots of orchis。初期作では同郷のtristezaともシンクロする短音のクリアトーン・ギターが印象的なジャジーなインストを奏でていたのだけど、リリースを重ねるごとに独自の深化を遂げてゆくこととなる。肥大化していったアブス
トラクト・ヒップホップやダヴの影響は、Justinにドラムスティックだけでなく、ターンテーブルをも持ち込ませることに。前面に押し出していたギターの音は背面へと追いやられ、かわってキーボードやベースが主旋律を刻んでいくことに。どっしりとしたリズムが骨格を成し、エレクトロニクスで味付けされたインストはダークでアトモスフェリックな佇まい。シカゴ周辺と共振するような音の響きで西海岸のシーンにおいては一際異彩を放っているユニークなバンド。なお、現在はサン・フランシスコに活動の拠点を移した模様。(25.11.04)
